About the author

Rick Lyttle, who was born in Los Angeles in 1927, has been making prints for a good part of his adult life. He grew up on a ranch, served in the U.S. Navy during the closing months of World War II and then entered the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in English.

After graduating, he worked as a ranch hand, reporter and editor, bar tender, school bus driver, teacher, and freelance writer more or less in that order. He has written forty-one books, some of which carry his own illustrations. He began exploring printmaking in the fifties, first with relief prints and later with etchings.

His interest in printing led him back Indian Valley College in Novato and later to Sonoma State University in Rhonert Park. He has studied under Shane Whare, Kate Delos, Bud Gralapp, Walt Kuhlman, Mark Perlman, Ted Greer, Kent Rupp and several other outstanding teachers.

Lyttle uses a variety of techniques, and his images range from the abstract to the whimsical and from figures and landscapes to still life and portraits. His work has appeared in more than 100 juried shows.

He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers (www.caprintmakers.com) and has participated in Point Reyes Open Studios (www.pointryesart.com) for the past several seasons.

Pablo Picasso undoubtedly one of the most prolific artists and dominant figures of the 20th Century, produced mass amounts of art in multiple mediums and continued to create new works until the day he died.
Picasso lived his youth in poverty, yet never stopped painting and creating. Decade by decade his artistic abilities and experimentations intensified. With little formal education, he educated himself by observing his father's works, visiting museums and viewing the works of great artists like Velacquez, Rembrandt, friend and rival Henri Matisse, and many more. He took his observations of their masterpieces and made his own, entirely different masterpieces.

Simultaneously criticized and revered, often misunderstood, this complex man could "make art" out of almost anything including discarded bicycles and paper bags. With paintings, etchings, lithographs, pottery and more, Picasso experimented and pushed whatever mediums in which he was working into new, never-before-done creations. Sometimes he joyously collaborated with other artist-friends like Braque to experiment and invent cubism, which later became a movement. Often he worked alone, day and night, without much sleep. Endlessly creating, creating, creating.

His relationships with women are legendary. There was Francoise Gilot, an artist in her own right, 21 years old when he was 61 years old. She, like Jacqueline Rogue and Russian ballet dancer Olga Khaklova, with whom he married and had two children, became a lover and a subject of much of his art. Whenever there was a new woman there were his new forms of art.

This book covers Picasso's long life and extensive works, including lesser-known facts about him as artistic director of theatre productions, poster making for the early European Communist Party, and much more. He was not known to compromise in life or in art. Sometimes erasable yet also an affectionate grandfather, Pable Picasso, only 5'3' was surely larger than life.

I know now the life and work of Pablo Picasso. A very hard-working man who loved to create by painting, sculpting and creating all the types of art there can be. He loved life, simply.
He jumped around in many relationships and had 4 children. 2 of which had careers in fashion.
This book had 22 chapters and they went into his personal and professional life. I enjoyed this book and will continue to read books on other artists.
