“Benjamin Monroe has just uncovered the greatest scientific discovery the world has ever known: the gene that controls aging. What's more the scientist has created an elixir that actually stops the aging process when tested on mice. This discovery is going to revolutionize the world and make Benjamin a very rich and famous man. Or so Benjamin thought. A string of mysterious murders leaves Benjamin and several of his closest friends and co-workers dead. Heartbroken but as stubborn as her father, Celeste Monroe take it upon herself to find her father's murderer and assure that he's given create for his discovery. Unfortunately, every clue Celeste gets seems to lead to another murder.
The Elixir has a very interesting premise, that the fountain of youth is a gene and not a place. Moreover, if someone had actually discovered such a find, it is likely that his life and anyone involved in the process would be in danger. There would lots of cover ups and people wanting to keep the discovery for their own purposes. This book touches on a few of the possibilities.

This was one of those books that I kept trying to find time to get back to reading because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The two main characters, Celeste and Jake, never seemed to catch a break. First, Celeste's father was murdered. Then, Jake was arrested as the killer. After he's released on probation, Jake teamed up with Celeste to find her father's murderer, except they end up finding more and more dead bodies wherever they went. AND someone was out to kill them!
I usually can figure out the "who-done-it," but this one wasn't an easy one to figure out. In fact, I still doubted it toward the end of the book. I think there were just one too many names thrown into the equation at the very end, but that's just me. The plot was brilliant and realistic, in my opinion. The characters were well-developed, and I'm happy with the ending. :-) The suspense was great, though there were a few parts that moved a little too quickly (or maybe I was just reading too quickly...lol!). ;-)
If you like mystery and suspense, then you'll love this book. :-)

Lame
More of a romance really, with some suspense included. An interesting plot but the story swung from romance to fear and murders like a pendulum on a clock. Two of the big ideas in the book the authour managed to contradict herself on. Firstly her dad wasn’t involved in her life at all. Why then does she remember all the wonderful details of having fun with him. The person she said yes she’d marry was so much like her father, but put family first over work. Then why did he say his first wife played around on him because he was always at work! It’s written more than once that he is a workaholic. There are spelling and other proof reading errors. Really a sub par attempt at writing and certainly not a thriller. Lame.

I didn't get very far in the story, but it was a bit more worldly than I care for in the books I read, so I didn't go any farther. As far as I got the writing was very good, but I wasn't far enough into the story to give it more than three stars.

The Elixir begins with an interesting premise. How far would a pharmaceutical company go to market an elixir that extended life span for many years? As the body counts keeps stacking up the answer is clear. They'd go pretty far. The creator's daughter Celeste is aided in her investigation of her father's murder by friend and coworker Jake. The two have a great friendship and aren't sure they want to chance it to romance.
The action moves along nicely, and I liked the characters. I also thought it had a nice blend of mystery and romance with clues to keep you intrigued. This is the first Lori Soard book I've read, but I wouldn't mind reading another.
