In recent decades, Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) has regained his rightful place in European art history as an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period. This hardcover volume explores the life and work of the acclaimed 18th-century master, who is often compared to Canova, and includes over 300 images.
Excellent presentation of Thorvaldsen's development as a mature artist, hence focusing on his life in Rome, not so much about his education in Denmark. The author has structured the book chronologically, which makes sense as the sculptor in different periods dedicated himself to different sujets. Both the thematic interests and the stylistic development are related to the discussions on esthetics of the period. Much space is dedicated to the relation to Canova, first as Thorvaldsen's role model then his rival.
