About the author

Patricia Goodspeed, a retired attorney-at-law, is a Purdue and Indiana University graduate. She and her husband, Donald Goodspeed, an Indiana University graduate, reside in a small town in Central Indiana. They've lived there for over forty years. They raised three children along with three exchange students, a foster child , two dogs, and Abyssinian and other breeds of cats. They have six grandchildren scattered in Texas, Korea, and Indiana. She and her family love to travel. Patricia lived throughout the United States and in Istanbul, Turkey. She traveled in Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean islands, Europe, and the Middle East. She and her husband are active members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Her hobbies include reading, traveling, collecting and wearing hats, photography, knitting, Dance Orientale, and genealogy.

Diana Orem and her husband live in rural Indiana. Diana was a Purdue graduate with an undergraduate degree in English and a Master of Science in Education. She was an avid Purdue fan of both football and basketball and a strong Colts supporter. They have four daughters, one son, and two grandchildren. She loved to read and to travel. Diana felt there was a lack of novels in the Christian Mystery genre. She wanted to help fill this void with this novel, she liked to call Trinkle, Trinkle, Whittle Scar before we coined the title Murder on Persimmon Lane. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Castle, Indiana. With passion she enjoyed all aspects of her life. Unfortunately she passed this life and joined her Savior in 2013.

I truly enjoyed this book, I enjoyed the characters and how the author's incorporate religion in there mystery and that made me feel good. So many won't talk about religion. I was so surprised about the end of the book and who done it. Patricia Goodspeed has a unique way in writing. I loved it because the placed in Indiana they talked about I knew them, I live south of New Castle. Try this book you will enjoy it.

I'm sorry to say while the authors included a lovely note and seem like wonderful people I didn't like their style of writing at all.
The basic storyline was good and could have been interesting except for the conversations which used words that people would never really use in a casual conversation. The conversations themselves were so unrealistic. People just really don't speak to one another in that manner. Also they went on and on in extreme detail about everything. People's clothes and what they thought of other peoples clothes, the kind of suitcase they carried, the rooms they were in- absolutely everything. All of this took away from the main story line and just dragged out the book. The character of Madelyn was especially unrealistic. Perhaps they know someone like that but I hope not. And yet no one ever got upset with her which is something else that would never happen. I'm not sure what their goal was in writing this book. I feel badly that it could have been a good mystery if it had been written better.

Murder on Persimmon Lane centers around the questions of who killed Gustafeson Trinkle, aka "Gussy." I thought the authors did a good job of introducing the central characters and the town that Gussy lived in. At times it felt as though there were too many story lines, but in the end the connections appear. And they also kept me guessing right to the end.

That said, the book was a step below the kind of novels that suck me in and keep me up all night. There was something about the prose that seemed more formal than conversational and active. I never did figure out the cause of the log jams. And I could have done with less discussion of the details of women's fashion.

This book fills one of those special niches in fiction that give a clear view into a small segment of a larger culture, in this case, a semi-rural region in Indiana in the orbit of a much larger city. It also gives vignettes into the evil and goodness of a diminishing but still viable slice of Christian America. As the easy-reading literary equivalent of easy-listening music, it probably will never rise to a best-seller list. Nevertheless, readers find a sense of satisfaction that they have plugged into the minds and hearts of the authors, two intelligent and charming Hoosier ladies. Possibly prejudicial revelation: I'm friends with one of the authors.
