Twin Text: Sarcone-Roach, J. (2015). The bear ate your sandwich. New York: Knopf Books for Young Readers.

Rationale: In Tell Me Why? Bears Hibernate, emphasis is placed on the fact that bears eat a lot of food before they hibernate or sleep for several months. A curious child wonders where all the bears are during the winter. His questions are answered throughout the book, along with information that not all bears hibernate. It's all based on their locations. The Bear Ate Your Sandwich is a funny story in which a bear comes out of hibernation and “eats” the sandwich of a young girl before going back to his den. Or so her dog tells her. This funny way of talking about bears eating before hibernation will have students understanding the importance bears place upon food.

Text features: Table of contents, bold face words, headings/subheadings, photos with captions, a glossary, and index.
Text structure: question and answer along with description

Strategy: A KWL chart would work great with these two books. Students could use the KWL chart before reading Tell Me Why? They would write down what they think they know about hibernation and bears and what they want to learn. After reading both stories, students would go through their chart again to add what they learned based on information from both books. This could also be done as a whole class activity. This chart could even inspire students to ask other questions and seek out other books about bears or hibernating animals.
