About the author

David Alderton is a UK-based writer specialising in pets and natural history topics. Growing up in a home surrounded by pets, he originally trained to become a veterinary surgeon. An allergic dermatitis acquired in his final year of study forced a change of career however, and so led him into the field of writing about pets and their care. He has since become a regular contributor of articles on this subject to a wide range of newspapers and magazines in the UK and abroad, and also participates frequently in radio and television programmes.

His books have currently sold over six million copies, and have been translated into 30 different languages. David’s titles have won awards in the USA from the Cat Writers' Association of America and the Maxwell Medallion from the Dog Writers’ Association of America, as well as being nominated for the Sir Peter Kent Conservation Book Prize. He has also chaired the National Council for Aviculture, the umbrella organisation for bird-keeping clubs and associations in the UK, and is a member of the Kennel Club, as well as editor of the monthly magazine Practical Reptile Keeping.

IMO this book is a good introduction for someone like me who has never owned a bird or been in close contact to a kept bird. It has been written for the layperson. Cool. I was the first to borrow this book from my library. Now I am first to review on Goodreads. Why only 3 stars? By this description of the book, it should have 5. It is just my weird rating system is all. It is not a "must read" (4) or one of the best books I ever read, had a profound effect on me (5) I read this because my cat died at 19. Her sister is now on her last legs. I love having an animal around and I'd love a pet dinosaur so it only makes sense to do some research. At first I wanted a parrot. I still do. But after reading, I just don't have that kind of time to commit. Maybe Lovebirds? I'd love to build an aviary. This book was an excellent introduction and answered all my questions.

As a beginner of reading books about birds,this book was very informative.And gave me confidence to see if I can be a successful pet bird owner or rather a pet bird companion.

A great guide, but I wouldn't say this is about pet birds. This book focuses on breeding and exhibition.
