Kelly roams the outskirts of the forest with her friends while they attempt to collect various bugs for a science assignment. Soon, a particularly rare butterfly catches her eye and she wanders into the woods in hot pursuit until it suddenly disappears. When Kelly turns back, she realizes she is completely turned around with no idea how to get back to her friends. Armed with only a mason jar, a butterfly net, and a small lunch, Kelly is forced to contend with the wilderness and many of the dangers therein.
32 pages of text and 10 pages of realistic illustrations make this short story quick to read. The illustrations of the BEAR are very good. I have too many experiences of bears and me sharing the same space. It made my pulse race a tad. Kelly has left her bug collection project lapse over the summer and now she must bag a bunch of bugs. She is invited to go along to her friend's mountain cabin where she will have access to lots of specimens. Kelly was under the impression that her friend was going to help her, but the friend decided that she deserved a day relaxing, not chasing bugs since she had already completed the task. Lesson 1: Do not go off on your own - travel with a companion. Lesson 2: Take a compass and water. Lesson 3: Ask if it is Bear Country and never stick a yummy sandwich in your pants. Kelly can be very glad that she paid attention to her surroundings when she previously visited her friend's cabin. I was impressed that she never really panicked and had some basic knowledge such as finding a stream and following it down stream. All in all this should be a fun read for an budding adventurer.
