One pleasure associated with having succumbed to an abiding interest in the American Civil War is that you can always find new (and old) books to read ― and learn from ― concerning your pastime, or preoccupation. So it was that a few weeks ago I happened to stumble across this very slender volume (183 pages) at a local used bookstore. This is Volume 7, No. 1 of Civil War Regiments, a journal which I've never perused before, this particular issue subtitled Chickamauga and Chattanooga: Battles for the Confederate Heartland. I happened to be doing some research into this very subject at the time and the slimness of the volume had a certain appeal to me (I could casually dip down into it at my leisure), as did the four dollar asking price.

Containing six disparate articles covering subjects associated with the Chickamauga/Chattanooga region, the unevenness is about as you'd expect, although there's nothing disappointing here to pull the collection down. It's a charming, eclectic collection of information and insights, which is about as complimentary as is possible. Naturally some pre-existing knowledge of the region's history is advisable, though not absolutely required, to appreciate these specific glosses of actions at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the article about the use ― and abuse ― of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park as a troop training ground for Spanish-American War soldiers to be informative and engaging. This little volume will intrigue anyone interested in this vital region to Civil War history.
