Hanging the Macon County Witch

Rate this book
Hanging the Macon County Witch is a true story. The hanging outlined in this book really took place in Lafayette, Tennessee in the late spring of 1845. This bizarre story follows a slave woman named Lize – who claims to be a witch by the way – from the time Wilson Meador purchased her, until the Macon County Sheriff hanged her. This story has several weird twists and turns, including Lize trading her own head to a local doctor for ginger cakes and hard cider. Truth is stranger than fiction and this true story is as strange as they come!

A short (30 minutes) interesting read of the story of a slave in Macon County, Tennessee who committed murder against her slave holder family. I found the story incredibly interesting. Wish there was more background knowledge of Lize and her story, but I can imagine records from 1845 are difficult to find.

Interesting

Interesting history of Macon County, Tennessee. Having grown up around this area, my grandparents living there, I’ve never heard this story.
I love hearing the old stories.
This is a heartbreaking bit of history though. For both the Meador’s family and Lize.

It was a short but interesting read about what happened where my family and I live now. It says it's a true story, but of course, we only hear one side of the story. Would be interesting to hear the other side of it, too.
