The old mansion would make the perfect gallery to showcase his art with some renovations and updates. Little did Thomas Shear know, he may need Ghostbusters, too. A gifted artist, Tom has started having nightmares of horrendous proportions, and they all revolved around young girls who were brutally beaten, tortured and murdered. To purge his mind of these horrors, he painted each scene as if he were there. Was he receiving some type of message from beyond? Is it possible his home has been haunted by the restless spirits of lost souls?
His portraits are a huge success, but Tom has begun receiving threats and even the police think his art is too close to the truth of each ghoulish event. With his background and the details the police never shared he has become the prime suspect and the clock is ticking on proving his innocence as those he cares about the most are falling victims to the suffering these spirits endured as well as an earthbound evil who wants the truth buried forever. Is the killer still running free and determined to stop at nothing to silence Tom? What messages are the young spirits trying to convey? Are they the best chance of capturing their tormentor and saving his latest victim? The secrets of the house, the people and the world of the supernatural will hold you spellbound in the grips of terror and what ifs…

Portrait of Rage was a big, big surprise. I knew it was going to be good but it went beyond my expectations. I was captivated within the first few pages and it had me hooked till the very end. The story is centered on an artist and a murder investigation. Thomas Sharp, our main character, recently purchased a perfect house to showcase his art, but what he didn’t except was it to be haunted...by little girls all under the age of sixteen. The girls’ terrorizes his dreams and his waking hours, urging him to find their murderer and it is through his art that readers follow along Thomas as he discovers what happened to the nine little girls and the identity of the killer.
Wise’s Portrait of Rage is impressive. The writing was natural and the story flowed seamlessly. The plot /structure was perfect and the pacing great. I can tell the author took time and consideration in everything she did, from how the story was setup to the words written on the pages. Everything from the setting, characters, and paranormal elements served its purpose and made the book come alive. For example, Thomas used painting as a medium to interpret the girls' messages. I thought this was clever and visually detailed that I can picture it perfectly in my mind. Another reason why I thought it was notable is because this is the author’s debut novel. If I didn’t know that already, one would have thought a seasoned author with multiple books under her belt wrote it.
Portrait of Rage is told through multiple POVs which gave readers an in-depth look at the characters and a wider perspective on the situation. I love seeing the story from Thomas, the detectives, and the killer’s point-of-view. Wise is a natural storyteller and she did a great job creating the perfect combination of mystery, thriller, suspense, and romance with a touch of supernatural. While the story is filled with tormented specters, there was an interesting turn of events with some of the characters possessing unique abilities. Portrait of Rage kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. The story had so many twist and turns that when the big reveal came…I was speechless! I thought I had the killer pegged but I was so shocked when I found out who it was. Definitely didn’t see that one coming! I loved Portrait of Rage and I think it’s an excellent start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what the author has planned for The Marcel Experience. I highly recommend Portrait of Rage. I think it will appeal to a lot of people, as there is something for everyone. Read it, you won’t be disappointed!
At first I wasn't too sure about this book, just because it was new. However, I do love a good paranormal story, so went ahead and jumped in; it only took the Prologue before I was hooked! Mrs. Wise started the story so well and creepily, yet real life, that I couldn't put the book down. Soon the Prologue turned into Chapter 1, then 2, then 3, etc. Before I knew it, it was time to make dinner and start being productive because th day had gotten away from me. The next day, I picked up the book and fell into the story again. Long story short, Portrait of Rage is one of those stories that will grab you from the get go. It is a story that will have you thinking about what happends next, even while you are doing laundry, driving down the street, or sitting at work. It is a paranormal thriller with real life aspects, such as romance, detective work, and forensics, and I totlly recommend this book to anyone. Even if you don't like these types of stories, try it out anyway!
This was a really good book. My girlfriend had just read it and kept trying to give it to me to thumb through. Finally I did, and I have to say, I started reading it and enjoyed every bit. I am not a fast reader by any means, but the story was really captivating and it kept my interest. I read it off and on for several weeks until I finished. I would recommend it as a really good story with ghosts, murders, and some romance.
Portrait of Rage by Cynthia H. Wise is the first book in The Marcel Experience. It is about a painter, Thomas Shear, who moves into a new house. He then begins to paint portraits of murdered little girls, which is just the tip of the iceberg in this story. It was full of mystery and suspense that I just couldn't stop reading. My only problem with this story is the ending. I felt the ending just didn't go with the story. It must be introduced in the second installment, which I haven't read. If not for the ending, I would have given this book a five star rating. I won this book in a blog giveaway, and all pinions are my own.
