About the author

Cyndy Szekeres (pronounced "zeck-er-es") is the daughter of a toolmaker, Stephen Szekeres, and his wife Anna Ceplousky Szekeres. In 1954, Szekeres earned a certificate from the Pratt Institute in New York. Szekeres has illustrated over 40 children's books, and is best known for her animal characters. She has also written or compiled and self-illustrated 67 titles. Szekeres won the AIGA Award for her work on Moon Mouse (1969). Szekeres currently lives on a farm in Vermont.

A fun read. family members, modes of transportation, and an ending that always delights

Baby Bear’s Surprise tells the story of a little bear that gets dressed up for a walk with his mom and dad. Other family members pass by baby bear on their way going somewhere, which baby bear later finds out is his surprise birthday party. Szekeres creates suspense throughout the plot by having baby bear asking where each member of his family is going, and his parents always reply “You’ll see” or “Let’s find out.” This make the child curious, making him/her want to turn the page. Baby Bear’s Surprise is a board book as well as a concept book because it teaches colors within the story line. Szekeres’ illustrations depict a water color medium while giving texture with the suggestion of fur on the bears. This story is age appropriate for 2-5 years old.
