Assessment is an essential part of the learning process, and its value extends beyond just the formal grading of students. It is through assessment that students can discover what they have understood, what skills they have developed, and what they have not. Without this knowledge, their ability to build on strengths and remedy weaknesses is severely curtailed. This book aims to provide teachers with a range of practical suggestions establishing clear and precise subject objectives; choosing assessment tasks most suited to testing the extent to which these objectives have been met; formulating and articulating marking criteria for the assessment tasks; and developing a realistic and meaningful mechanism for providing feedback to students once a task has been assessed in order to encourage more effective learning.
