The present book `Guidelines for Yogic Practices` is a handbook which should work as a self-instructor to the beginners of Yoga practices. The book adequately describes many Hathayogic practices such as Asanas, Pranayamas, Bandhas, Mudras, Kriyas and Meditation to help an initiate to gain ground in the subject. Each technique of Asana, Pranayama etc. has been presented with proper sequence with a view to understanding practice in an easy and smooth manner. Moreover, principles of each group of practice have also been lucidly placed to provide sufficient conceptual clarity to a practitioner.
The guideline for yogic practices is in the form of a yarn made out of the cotton balls. Our yogic savants have left us a legacy of yoga- Shastra based on their experiments making a man psycho-physiologically balanced by influencing the internal secretions, toning up the musculature and attaining mental poise. This system is better and more effective than any other in vogue today. With the most practical outlook swami kuvalayanandji dexterously gave the old yogic practices a new dimension by providing scientific explanation and bringing the practices within the reach of common man. We have continued the thread of his yogic tradition in the book. The important stages of the practices have been illustrated to give their semi-slow motion continuity. The basic information, provided in the book, gives every man capability of reaching the acme of psycho-physical fitness required in modern times. The book forms a thread that may be termed as 'applied science'-of the old & the new -based on 'yogic practices'.

It’s only 88 pages so as you can imagine it’s a pretty brief explanation of yogic practices. The drawings are crude and sometimes unhelpful or confusing. Other than that, for someone who has already taken a couple of yoga classes, i guess this book would be a nice thing to glance over if you’re practicing at home without your yogi. For sure not for beginners with no clue how yoga moves are supposed to look, or feel to the body. And the last couple of poses are about interesting tubes into your body and controlling your gag reflexes which.... does to me the opposite of what yoga and meditation is supposed to achieve. Each to their own i guess?? but really by no means is this a beginners guide to yoga, i know it didn’t claim to be but... i’d be wary of anyone basing their practice on these guys. Still a very easy all round read which is helpful to reach for when you’re stuck for a sun salutation.
