Arizona Ranger Sam Burrack rides into Sabre Ridge with one prisoner and a list of the man's kinfolk wanted for robbery and murder. Burrack doesn't want the whole clan-just the killers. He has the entire town against him and no hard evidence. The odds are heavily stacked against the Ranger-but that's just the way he likes it...
It is a well written book with plenty of action. The Ranger comes to town with his female Hispanic assistant and teams up with an African-American bounty hunter to go after some Caucasian bad guys. I am afraid when you say it like that, it is awfully PC, but it was written in 2003. In addition, the Mexican bandits are even more unbelievable. Still, it is action packed with likable characters.
When I got this book I thought the author was Ralph Compton not Ralph Cotton...I'd much rather have read Compton. Cotton's story of the west was too much into detail of the seedier side of Western cities and very violent and full of loose language that writers like Compton, L'Amour and Grey avoid. I'll stick to the more romantic Western writers as much as possible. The basic story line of THIS book WAS a little interesting, but the unfolding of the story had a lot of scenes I speed read through. If I know the book is Ralph Cotton and NOT Ralph Compton...I will avoid reading another one.
I am not normally a western fan but a few writers seem to jump out and grab me. Ralph Cotton writes a quick paced and very historically accurate book. Nice read with great characters. Very recommended
