In an exotic land, their lost love blazed anew into glorious passion!

FATE HAD ONCE TORN THEN FROM EACH OTHER...BUT A LOVE SO SPLENDID COULD NEVER DIE

Despite the fire glowing in her windblown hair and defiant heart, Tessie Gallagher had yet to find true happiness in a man's arms. When she arrived in the mysterious land she had dreamt of since childhood, she was stunned to encounter the love of her wild-hearted youth. Tessie vowed not to give the handsome enigma called Jason Lancaster the chance to hurt her again...as he had done in far-off San Francisco ten years before.

But the sudden disappearance of her favorite uncle forced her to accept Jason as her guide through a perilous mountain terrain. Traveling with him deep into misty realms, Tessie risked danger from her uncle's enemies...and from the tender feelings aroused in her by Jason's potent charm.

Unable to restrain the rush of yearnings, she gave herself to him in passion's abandon. Yet as her body tasted exquisite pleasure, Tessie was tormented by fear. Their love seemed wondrously reborn...but a new betrayal might be waiting behind Jason's fervent embrace!

I'm giving this book three stars for the atypical setting in Japan and for the historical background of a society in transition, a time when the old ways were dying out and the Japanese had to find a balance between their traditions and the modern world.

As for the story of the MC, Tessie and Jason, I can't say I was too impressed. First off, while I don't mind a stretch of time while they're apart, ten years is really stretching it! (I'd say three of four at the most is enough.) True, they were very young when they first fell in love (he was 21, she 16) and Tessie was too immature to be ready for a commitment, especially when she had a manipulative hypochondriac for a mother to deal with, but I think the undelivered letter/new suitor tale was a bit lame, and Jason was kind of dumb to fall for it. Then, when they meet again (in Yokohama, of all places, he on business, she to search for her missing uncle) there's the usual pretense of no longer caring, coupled with a silly story she tells him, of a nonexistent fiancé named Riccardo. Then, for a young woman who's supposed to be intelligent and independent, as well as argumentative, she keeps fantasizing about Jason sweeping her off her feet, making all the decisions, and going into caveman mode, and gets disappointed when he doesn't act that way. She didn't make much sense.

I would have liked more time given to the secondary couple, Masao and Shizuka, young Japanese people caught between their own ideas and desires and the traditions and way of life they grew up with. In fact, I would have liked a separate book about them.

If you read this book, go for the background info and knowledge of Japan history, but don't expect too much from the love story so you won't be disappointed.
