I thought the writing was pretty good here, and the characters were interesting and well drawn. I didn't find myself getting really caught up in the story, though, and I felt that the ending was actually fairly weak. The main characters seemed more to observe the ending than take any part in resolving it.
It seemed like the author was trying to do a kind of Dean Koontz riff, but it didn't work as well as I would have liked.

A just okay outing by Ed Gorman, writing under his pseudonym Dan Ransom. This one felt like a mashup of a few of his other books, containing similar themes and characters. The main flaw is that a bunch of characters are introduced in the final third of the book, it kind of messes up the flow. The first two thirds were decent, however. Not Gorman/Ransom's best. Still, Gorman is a better writer than most, and even in this uneven novel there are fantastic passages here and there.
