This book was up for a Coretta Scott King Award until it was learned that the author is white. This is unfortunate because this is a great story about family, education, and the trials of a brave, smart boy in the inner city! A great read for young readers!

I thought this book was wonderful. While reading it, I had my eyes opened to things that most people would like to forget. I highly recommend it to anyone, kid or adult.
