Замах
Рохір ван Аарде (справжнє прiзвище ван Реєн) народився 1917 року в Ротердамi. Перший його роман "Каїн" з'явився 1941 року, другий роман "Голос у пустелi" теж бiблiйного характеру. Романи були забороненi в окупованих нацистами Нiдерландах. Автор був арештований гестапо i ув'язнений в концтабiр де i познайомився з українцями. Пiсля вiйни був журналiстом, працював у провiдних газетах Нiдерландiв.
Полiтичному вбивству присвятив свiй роман "Замах" нiдерландський письменник Рохір ван Аарде. Знайомство з його творчiстю явище безсумнiвно неординарне оскiльки йдеться про вбивство Степана Бандери, одного з лiдерiв українського нацiоналiзму, агентом КГБ Богданом Сташинським. Прагнучи вибороти незалежнiсть рiдної держави Степан Бандера вдавався до засобiв, якi вважав заєдино виправданi та єдино доцiльними в сiтуацiї, що склалася на момент початку Другої Свiтової Вiйни...

Мені завжди важко писати відгуки на аудіокниги, бо боюся, що через такий формат «читання» не вловлюю весь зміст і суть твору.
Минулої зими, завдяки довгим прогулянкам (для когось - снам) з візочком, мені вдалося прослухати дуже багато аудіокниг (ну бо ж холодно сидіти і перегортати сторінки паперової, а тим більше електронної книжки, коли тачпад не реагує на рукавицю 🙄). «Замах» я ж почала слухати ще десь у березні чи квітні, а тоді наші сни надворі припинились (просто хтось не так підріс, як позбувся обіймів зимового комбінезона, які так гарно наганяли сон). І ось тепер тільки дослухала.
Отже так, «Замах» - про вбивсто Степана Бандери, як можна зрозуміти із фото. Але книга художньо-історична і усі імена у ній змінено, а де межа між правдою і вигадкою - судити історикам.
Розповідь глибоко психологічна, адже показує нам душевні муки і прийняття важких рішень вбивцею, та насправді сконцентрована не на події одного злочину.
Ми спостерігаємо шлях головного героя від дня, коли його, українця та члена справжньої націоналістичної родини, вербують у радянську розвідку, до дня прийняття важливого рішення, як покинути небезпечну роботу та не наразити на небезпеку кохану дружину.
Чи вдалося йому втекти та уникнути смертельних наслідків, спойлерити не буду.
Рохір ван Аарде - нідерландський письменник та журналіст, який у свій час зазнав переслідувань зі сторони гітлерівського режиму, завдяки яким він і познайомився з українцями та їхньою історією. Створений ним на основі реальних історичних фактів та образів персонаж відрізняється від звичних мені в нашій українській літературі незламних героїв (просто згадую Івана Багряного). Чи не про усі його рішення хочеться кричати, що вони неправильні, що ти хлопче твориш, навіщо наражаєш на небезпеку ще й невинну дівчину і невже ти думаєш, що так вдасться зберегти життя й свободу рідних? Коротше, ви вже зрозуміли, що персонажів другої половини 20 століття люблю жертовних, холодних і відданих ідеї. В цьому плані я дуже романтична.
Не знайшла, чи ця книга видана у звичному форматі, а навіть, якщо і так, - перечитувати ніколи не буду. Та це не міняє суті, що рада знайомству з нею. Для загального розвитку, як то кажуть 😁

This is a book about the murder of Степан Бандера in Munich (1959) by a KGB agent. It’s a fictionalized recreation of the events as if from the point of view of this agent, Богдан Сташинський.
The fictional component is purely symbolic here, I believe (very careful and entirely justified assumptions about the personality and internal thoughts of Богдан Сташинський, plus all the names are changed but easily reconstructed by anybody who knows the real story). In all the other regards, the book follows the events and people involved very closely as they were in reality. Рохір ван Аарде (Rogier van Aerde, or Adolf Josef Hubert Frans van Rijen) used the materials of Богдан Сташинський’s trial (1962) held in West Germany and widely attended/covered by mass media at the time.
I found this book well-written and quite interesting — I mean, if you already know who Степан Бандера was and why he was killed by the KGB but never looked deeply into the murder itself and did not know anything about the killer’s personal story. (For all the others, I suppose, the book would not make much sense anyway — and it’s no wonder that the book is known exclusively in Ukraine and most likely was never interesting for anybody in the Western world.)
This story is incredible (starting from the origin and personal life of Богдан Сташинський — a simple village boy from a family of Ukrainian nationalists becomes one of the most precious and effective KGB agents in the West, huh?! and then flees to the West, confesses and agrees for a public trial even if nobody would ever suspect that it was him who killed Степан Бандера, and is never found afterward? — and up to a quirky and highly innovative method of killing), and I suspected at the beginning that the author probably “fictionalized” too much of it, but then I checked it on wikipedia and in other sources, and saw that Рохір ван Аарде did a very thorough journalist work and you can easily consider his book a documentary novel to a large extent. Later, I also confirmed all this for myself via “Убивство у Мюнхені. По червоному сліду” by Сергій Плохій.
Comparing to “Убивство у Мюнхені. По червоному сліду” by Сергій Плохій, this book is very limited both in the scope and point of view, of course, as it tells only about the life of Богдан Сташинський, his work for the KGB (partly), the murder, and the following events up to Богдан Сташинський’s flight to the West. It doesn’t tell anything even about the trial, although most of the information contained in the book was gathered during and because of the trial, of course. Neither it can tell you anything about the further fate of Богдан Сташинський or about the whole freaking geopolitics of this murder and trial, and all the related events. Still, considering that the book was written as early as in 1964, only two years after the trial, when people knew much less about all this, and no KGB archives or respective memoirs/evidence were available, “Замах” (“Iets beters dan de dood” in Dutch) is as full as possible for the time and provides a lot of interesting materials even for us today.
The author was a Dutch writer and journalist, and I cannot find much information about him now, but the only available sources claim that his first book was banned by the Nazis (as too “Jewish-minded”) and he was also repressed and stayed in concentration camps, where he communicated with Ukrainian nationalists and therefore became interested in them.
As I understand, the book was translated into Ukrainian some time ago but was not even published as a separate book — it was printed in a literary magazine “Всесвiт” (No. 3-4 in 2002), and today it is available only as an audiobook that was narrated from this magazine publication. The audiobook is widely available on youtube and in all the other usual resources. I am not sure whether it is very necessary to publish it as a separate book now, but I suppose it would do no harm, as it’s a well-written story and a good simplified approach for those who cannot read something more complex like “Убивство у Мюнхені. По червоному сліду” by Сергій Плохій but still wants to know at least some important details. I should also underline that the translation (by Ярослав Довгополий) and the stylistic language of the edition are exceptionally good, and I really enjoyed them. It’s this case when you learn more about the beauty and richness of the Ukrainian language from a good translation than from many contemporary Ukrainian authors.
