The Knowledge: Whiskey

Rate this book
Unravelling the mysteries of whisky, this eminently approachable and enjoyable guide delivers a working knowledge of this magical drink in all its aspects. Dave Waddell points the reader in the direction of the very best whiskies out there - whether Scotch blend, American bourbon, Irish triple distilled or Japanese single malt - outlining the history behind what goes into each glass as well as revealing how to get the most from every sip. Whisky's complex yet fascinating distilling and blending processes and the key differences between the major styles are covered in detail, while along the way a good few myths are debunked, including the idea that whisky has to be taken neat. In turns both authoritative and generous, Whisky is essential reading for both the newcomer and dedicated enthusiast alike.

I confess: I skimmed through at least half the book. But I doubt the author would disagree. The aim of the book is not to make a master taster out of you. Rather, it's a nice enrichment for anyone who enjoys their whiskey.

You want history? Check. You want a list of notable distillers and whiskies? Check. You want opinion and/or science? Check, and check.

But at the end of it all, the author beseeches you to put down the book, and take a good, fulfilling sip of whatever whiskey you choose. And enjoy, all the more after reading the book.

The only people who won't enjoy this one are those who drink to get drunk.

Erudite yet approachable - this is a very enjoyable and illuminating guide to whisky which left me feeling far better informed about everything from its history to the production process. It also left me enthused to find out more about the on-going global resurgence of whisky making; obviously to include tasting a selection of the recommendations included within. A timely and well written book.

Terrific overview of a complex subject that left you wanting to explore Whisky even more. Nicely written with an open minded tone and occasional moments of self deprecation that add to the sense of a writer having enormous fun writing about and sharing in his subject. Highly recommended.
