Don Bendell is currently one of my two favorite writers of western fiction (along with another cowboy-veteran Ken Farmer). I agree with other readers who have compared him to Zane Grey and Louis La'Amour, and I would add Elmer Kelton. The main character of Joshua Strongheart is very well developed, along with the subordinate characters who have been featured in some or all of the series. Just like Bendell's other novels, the good guys are truly heroic, and the bad guys are truly evil. The descriptions of Southern Colorado are especially colorful. The shooting sequences and fight scenes certainly reflect an author who is familiar with tactics and firearms, and the stealth of an Indian warrior like Joshua or the author - a Special Forces combat veteran. I also liked the inclusion of real cowboys of western history, Bat Masterson and Doc Holliday. Also, I nice subtle love story element. Strong work Bendell. Therfe really needs to be MANY more in the Strongheart series - at least as many as the Colt series.
