No one has rated this one on Goodreads, which surprises me. Anyway, Debbie Field offers a series of midwestern cottage core quilting designs. I mostly read it to learn more about the art of quilting.
There is an emphasis on quilting patterns as fodder for not only blankets but also wall hangings, pillow covers, bed spreads, and table runners (which are like a blanket but kind of narrow and more decorative). Are there squares and triangles? Yes! The colors are usually broadly autumnal--deep reds and greens over a brown border.
Growing up on the prairies, I was often raised around this aesthetic as well as this sort of cozy romanticized view of nature. The bison and the bear are not worrying but are rather interesting abstractions we can put on our walls. Leaves aren't crunkly matter we walk through in the fall but are rather idyllic beautiful shapes. I don't want to sound dismissive. I'm totally here for it.
I wonder if there are First Nations quilts. I now live in the Pacific Northwest and often find the indigenous depictions of the environment very striking. Time to search the library database.
