As soon as he was old enough, Ray McCullen left Horseshoe Creek and never looked back. It took his father's funeral to return, though his anger hadn't quite subsided. That's where he met Scarlet Lovett, who seemed to know more about his family's secrets than he did. Secrets ready to explode. Suddenly, Ray was at the center of a dangerous inheritance battle, with Scarlet caught in the middle. She'd only known kindness from the McCullens, but had enough pluck to stand her ground. And if Ray was to truly belong back home, he sure had to live up to the family name.
USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Herron fell in love with books at the ripe age of eight when she read her first Trixie Belden mystery. But she didn’t think real people grew up to be writers, so she became a teacher instead. Now she writes so she doesn’t have to get a real job. With over ninety books to her credit, she’s penned romantic suspense, romantic comedy and YA novels, but she especially likes writing dark romantic suspense and crime fiction set in small southern towns. I hadn't realized this was one of a series and now I will have to go back and read the earlier books - and any future books. This story caught me from the get go and I read it quickly. I really enjoyed the character of Scarlet.
Action, mysteries, palpable attraction, and life threatening family drama are the key elements of this marvellous romantic suspense story, that kept me up at night. The secrets start to pile up, as the brothers have buried their father, and the will is coming to the light of the day. Secrets that they never expected to be dealing with, things that could take apart that fragile treaty of peace between the brothers. I loved how the story was built, how the flow of it kept me glued to my Kindle, my interest high on the story and its development. Even though there's danger, threats, vandalism, attacks, and malicious action galore, the tension in the family, in between the characters, is what builds up, and turns to be explosive. Really well built momentums, that burst on a least expected moments. Ray and Scarlet's connection is immediate, but their past, and the connection to Ray's father, is on the way, the dangerous events at the same time, pulling them apart, and pushing them together. Ray has an intense desire to protect and cherish Scarlet, but their whole lifetimes, and the history, is in between them, preventing and forestalling their connection. Not to mention the reaction of Ray's brothers, when they are clued in, to the recent events, and crimes... I indulged in this tale, I wanted to savour it, yet at the same time inhale it. I love when that happens! ~ Five Spoons
Lot of mystery. You know some of who the bad guys are but you don't know which crimes they committed and who the others you can't trust.
Characters from previous books and plenty of new characters too. Ray is the third son. He has come home because his father is dying. He has not got along with his father because he knows some of his secrets. His father dies before he can tell him everything. Ray is a P.I.
Scarlet Lovett, shows up on the ranch two weeks after the funeral with a letter from Joe McCullen. Telling that Joe thought of her as a daughter. She was raised by Barbra and Joe's other son Bobby and they all were in the will.
Someone is trying to kill Scarlet. and stop her from receiving what Joe left her. Scarlet is a social worker and helps at the group home that she lived in till Joe took her out of it and arranged for her to live with Barbra.
There is a lot of drama, some danger, romance. There is one love scene. It leaves you wanting to come back to find out more secrets that Joe had.
I was given Roping Ray McCullen to read for free in exchange for a honest review from NetGalley and Harlequin.
"Herron nicely builds up the mystery layers, and the actual villain reveal is quite surprising. With a great hero and heroine with undeniable chemistry, Herron’s Heroes of Horseshoe Creek series is on a steady incline with each book" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
I really liked the characters and mystery, but was a tad frustrated we didn't find out who did one of the criminal activities at the end. Still, I want to read the next time.
This series is so much richer when read in order that I do not believe one should read them either as stand-alone books or read out of order. This story concentrates on the third McCullen brother, Ray, who as the youngest, typically did not get along either with his dad or his other brothers. After his dad dies there is an inheritance battle over the ranch and a social worker, Scarlett Lovett, who appears to know all about the family, becomes heavily involved with both ray and figures prominently in the legal battle going on. The action is exciting and a strong romance eventually develops between Ray and Scarlett. Each book in this series is hard to put down and as soon as I finish one I am off reading the next.
