The vulnerability of thirty-three-year-old Dwayne Pickens, whose mind has never grown beyond that of a boy, leads to a disaster that unites Casey, her family, and their Southern community in an effort to keep Dwayne from being sent to the "home" he dreads
A young girl spends the summer with her grandmother. She befriends a young man with mental disabilities and stands with him against his brother, who would banish him to an institution.
This book tells the story of 12-year-old Casey, and a magical summer she has making friends with a disabled man Duae Pickins. There are a couple of other side stories as well, but the book is mostly about Casey. The book was written in a rather mature fashion which was refreshing. It still had the innocence of being an adolescent however. I’d read more books by this author.
