Ώρα για προσωπικό rant: Ότι τώρα εγώ, κάθομαι και φτιάχνω λίστα με βιβλιοπροτάσεις για παιδιά, και έχω επί σκοπού βάλει πληθώρα βιβλίων που μιλάνε για θέματα όπως οι καλοί τρόποι, η ενσυναίσθηση, η αναπηρία κλπ, και θα τους τα διαβάζουν και θα τα εξηγούν οι μαλάκες οι γονείς τους, που από την αρχή του σχολικού έτους και μέχρι σήμερα, μού έχουν κάνει το βίο αβίωτο με το bullying που μού ασκούν σε σχεδόν καθημερινή βάση;
Που τους λέω ότι έχω προγραμματισμένες ιατρικές επισκέψεις και μού ζητάνε τα ρέστα γιατί θα λείψω, λες και λείπω καθημερινά, που μέσα σε 3.5 μήνες, έχω λείψει 3 φορές! Και να με βρίζουν, να μού ζητάνε να κανονίζω τα ραντεβού με το γιατρό όποτε τους βολεύει, να τους εξηγώ ότι έχω 67% αναπηρία (όχι την ίδια με τον ήρωα του βιβλίου, χα!) οπότε ΠΡΕΠΕΙ να πηγαίνω συχνά στο γιατρό και παίρνω αυτό που δικαιούμαι εκ του νόμου και να μού υπονοούν πως εγώ δουλεύω για χόμπι, σε αντίθεση και καλά με αυτούς και να χρησιμοποιούν εκφράσεις όπως "Οκ έχετε το δικαίωμα να εργαστείτε, αλλά γιατί δεν βρίσκετε κάτι άλλο;"
Ότι δήθεν, έχουν θέμα γιατί δεν ξέρουν που να αφήσουν τα παιδιά αφού δουλεύουν, που γνωρίζω ότι μια χαρά έχουν συγγενείς (πχ. παππούδες, γιαγιάδες κλπ) που μπορούν να βοηθήσουν. Αλλά δεν θα παραδεχτούν ότι το πρόβλημά τους είναι το "παρκάρισμα" στο ολοήμερο και πως θέλουν να έχουν για παραπάνω ώρες το κεφάλι τους ήσυχο, και τώρα εγώ με την αναπηρία μου, τους χαλάω το όνειρο!
Αναπηροφοβικά, χειριστικά, αγενέστατα και αχάριστα καθήκια, μακάρι όλα αυτά που μού κάνετε, να τα βρείτε από τα παιδιά σας!
Όσο αφορά το βιβλίο, οκ συμπαθητικό ήταν. Είναι ωραίο να βλέπεις μια τέτοια ποικιλομορφία στα παιδικά βιβλία. Κι αργότερα, βλέπεις και ποιοι γονείς έχουν κάνει ουσιαστική δουλειά πάνω σε αυτά τα θέματα, από το πως συμπεριφέρονται τα ίδια μη ανάπηρα παιδιά, σε εκείνα που είναι ΑΜΕΑ (κι έτσι καταλαβαίνουμε πως οι γονείς των γονιών της τάξης μου, δεν έκαναν καθόλου καλή δουλειά!)
Βέβαια, δεν ήταν και το καλύτερο βιβλίο που διάβασα μέσα στο μήνα. Ευελπιστώ ότι υπάρχουν κι άλλα καλύτερα που πραγματεύονται αυτό το θέμα.

Υ.Γ. Το προφίλ μου στο Goodreads, είναι 100% δημόσιο, σε αντίθεση με το προφίλ του Facebook και το προφίλ του Instagram, που δημόσιες είναι μόνο οι αναρτήσεις που εγώ επιλέγω. Αν μια στις χίλιες, το συγκεκριμένο κείμενο, υποπέσει στην αντίληψη γονιών που έχω τα παιδιά τους στην τάξη - συγκεκριμένα για το σχολικό έτος 2023-2024 - να ξέρουν ότι εννοώ και το παραμικρό κόμμα από όλα όσα έγραψα. Ας χτυπηθούν όσο θέλουν - όπως χτυπήθηκαν όταν τους είπα πως είναι αγενείς - κι ας κάνουν κι όσες "καταγγελίες" θέλουν στην πρωτοβάθμια - όπως άπειρες φορές με έχουν απειλήσει ότι θα κάνουν - το δικό μου αυτί δεν ιδρώνει. Είμαι σωστή εκπαιδευτικός, καλή στη δουλειά μου και καθ' όλα νόμιμη.
Ας κοιτάξουν με τη σειρά τους κι εκείνοι, μέσα τους, για να διαπιστώσουν αν είναι καλοί άνθρωποι και πετυχημένοι σαν γονείς. Η μέχρι τώρα εμπειρία μου μαζί τους, λέει πως όχι.

This book was written by Jennifer Moore-Mallinos and illustrated by Marta Fabrega.
The pictures are sweet and simple. The structure of the book as a whole isn't especially interesting visually speaking. On each page there is a picture and on the opposing side there is a short paragraph of text. The book doesn't bring anything new to the table, in my opinion.
The book speaks of a young boy that is confined to a wheel chair (or is he?). He narrates his own story of how his peers don't invite him to play games because he thinks that they theinkhe cannot play sports due to his wheel chair. The story goes as expected and he achieves his goal of getting good at playing basketball in his wheelchair. Honestly, the plot bored me to tears.
At the end of the book there are a series of activities that you could do with your class that blindfold them or restrict their movements so that they can experience life as a blind person or an individual in a wheelchair. There is also a letter to parents in the back that explains the purpose of the book which is blaring of acceptance and diversity.
This could be used in a 3rd-5th grade classroom so long as the activities at the end used. I suppose I am having a difficult time finding a place in a classroom for this particular read because I detested it so. This book was not compelling, though I understand the intention behind it, I simply did not like it and I would not use it in my classroom.

A bit 'of it's time', but overall this is one of the better disability picture books I've read so far. I think it strikes a good balance between "we're just like you!" and "we're different and that's okay!" sentiments. Everyone faces challenges, but those challenges are unique and differing degrees of intensity (and potentially have different sociopolitical origins/contexts, but that's a little more advanced of a concept).

This is a cute book that has the main character, a boy, who is in a wheelchair.
The story starts out as he tells about himself and moves in to things that upset him, like wanting to play with other kids.
He takes control of the situation and learns to do things in his wheelchair by himself. Although scared, he learns to persevere and show others that just because he is in a wheelchair , he is just like them.
This was a good book to show other kids that all kids want to be happy and have friends. Even if children do not have a disability, there may be other challenges they have to face and can do it if they work at it.
The illustrations are bold and bright. They engage the reader to know more.

The story is about Adrian a kid with a wheelchair and he talks about the challenges he faces everyday and how to cope with other kids at school, how they look at him and how he feels about it. It sends a great massage to kids not to be scared of a challenge!
"it's okay to be a little scared to try things that seem really hard to do. And it's okay that some people may have to work harder at certain things than others. But no matter what the challenge may be, big or small, we can all go ahead though hard work and lots of practice."
I liked the idea of listing some fun-to-do activities for normal kids to try out being in someone else's shoes.
Very nice and simple illustrations.
