Don't just understand philosophy - live it in the open-source revival for the digital age.
You find yourself in an endless forest, walking past trees like rockets. The smell of dry pine about to ignite. You see a deer, and its eyes are trying to tell you something...but what? These are some of the images of philosophy in action - the scenes you will visit and learn from.
For the initiated, Augustine offers an exhortation inspired by the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, yet everyone who struggles will find comfort in the energetic dialogues, essays, and letters within. Philosophy for Any Life embraces topics such as death, fire, chickens, anxiety, the unity of nature, sex, mindfulness, getting out of bed in the morning, anger, habit, resolve, suffering, and judgment all from the point of view of a Stoic philosopher. Thousands of years of ancient wisdom are rekindled in a fresh, modern style.
To be honest, you need to be in a certain bad place in life to get something out of a self-help book like this. I was recently in such a scenario, and I do not think that I would have been able to re-direct my life positively without Mr. Augustine's book. It is a readable, relatable, and useful guide to living a meaningful life. I would highly recommend it.
The author gave away this book for free on a forum where I had a chance to read it. And though he writes really well and gives great metaphors and has constructed pretty great stories to drive the stoic point across where this book falls off is the editing. In a lot of places you didn't know who was talking to whome, whether the author was telling a story or was he addressing you the reader. It made it difficult to understand and on a few occasions I had to reread to see who was addressing whome.
Of the editing was a bit much better then this book is really good in terms of material.
A real good book to make your day better. It's easy to pick up, flip to a chapter, and read something inspiring without having read the other chapters, which is convenient. You can take the book at your own pace, or read it through cover to cover. Either way, you'll get something out of it.
