Amazon Rainforest Magic: The adventures of Namowë, a Yanomami boy
SERIES: AMAZON RAINFOREST MAGICThe magic of the Amazon rainforest enchanted artist Barbara Crane Navarro as she spent the winter months with the Yanomami communities in Venezuela and Brazil over a period of twelve years. These travels inspired her to write her children's books. The vividly illustrated stories in this series evoke daily life in the rainforest and the magical quality of the Yanomami's relation to the plants and animals around them. The first book, "Amazon Rainforest Magic: The Adventures of Namow, a Yanomami Boy," recounts the journey of Namow, a thirteen year old Yanomami boy living in the rainforest, as he seeks a cure for his baby sister.

5 books9 followersFor twelve years, I spent each winter with Yanomami communities in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and Venezuela. Those experiences changed my life, inspiring both my artwork and the Amazon Rainforest Magic series for young readers.
The first book, Amazon Rainforest Magic: The Adventures of Namowë, a Yanomami Boy, follows thirteen-year-old Namowë as he searches for a mysterious remedy to save his baby sister, Yarima.
The second, Amazon Rainforest Magic: The Adventures of Meromi, a Yanomami Girl, tells the story of nine-year-old Meromi, whose unexpected adventure leads her into a confrontation with intruders, aided by a host of unlikely allies.
The third, Amazon Rainforest Magic: The Adventures of Yarima, a Yanomami Girl, follows five-year-old Yarima, together with her older brother and sister, as they face new challenges to protect their rainforest home.
Inspired by the Yanomami's profound relationship with the forest, these stories weave together adventure, imagination, and the everyday magic of life in the Amazon.
My hope is that they will inspire young readers to discover the beauty of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.

The lush rainforest is magic and for the people who live there, located near tributaries that are squeezed between the vast pressure from the mighty Amazon and Orinoco Rivers. This is their world and not for civilization to change and destroy. Thanks to the author for telling and showing us the beauty. We hope that the magic will remain for generations to come...
It brings back memories to me of going to the grammar school library and reading over and over the 'Brave Riders' and 'Sonny Elephant' and dreaming about adventure.

I bought this for my 7 yr old niece, as I thought it would be something enchanting for her, as well as an education about the environment, and indeed the lifestyles of peoples from different parts of the world. She really enjoyed it. Highly recommended for those of you with small children.

Beautiful
This book takes readers on a magical journey through the Amazon with Namowë, a young boy who risks everything to save his sister. The narrative is filled with imagination—talking animals like the wise Owl, the humorous Hurler Monkey, and the majestic Jaguar bring the forest to life. Namowë’s transformation into a Dragonfly-Bird is both alarming and fascinating, showing how deeply connected humans and nature can be.
The vivid descriptions of jungle life and Yanomami traditions pull readers into a world full of wonder and challenges. The story also has a powerful message about the importance of protecting the forest from destruction caused by humans. The heartwarming ending, where Namowë becomes a hero and the village celebrates his return, leaves readers with a sense of joy and reflection. This is a perfect read for people like me who love stories about courage, nature, and the magic of community.

Wonderful 👌
This story is a beautiful tale about a boy named Namowë who embarks on an incredible journey to save his baby sister using the healing powers of the forest. Along the way, he encounters magical plants, talking animals, and challenges that test his determination. From accidentally stepping on “Backwards Grass” that leads him astray to turning into a Dragonfly-Bird, Namowë’s adventure is full of surprises and lessons.
The story is not just about Namowë’s bravery but also highlights the importance of respecting nature and its delicate balance. Inspire a love for the environment
It is delightful and educational read for both children and adults. It offers a glimpse into the rich culture of the Yanomami and the beauty of the Amazon, making it a must-read for anyone interested in adventure and the wonders of nature.
Namowë's character is relatable and endearing, as he navigates the challenges of growing up, family responsibilities, and the expectations placed upon him. The inclusion of magical elements, such as the Spirits of the forest and the guidance of plants, adds a whimsical touch that enhances the narrative.
The author does an excellent job of painting vivid imagery of the rainforest, from the sounds of croaking toads and shrieking crickets to the sights of fireflies illuminating the night. The descriptions transport readers into the heart of the jungle, making it easy to visualize the rich ecosystem and the daily life of the Yanomami.
