Slavering hordes of the walking dead rule the streets of Baltimore, their decaying forms shambling across the ruined city, voracious and unstoppable. The remaining survivors hide desperately, for all hope seems lost... until an armored fortress on wheels plows through the ghouls, crushing bones and decayed flesh. The vehicle stops and two men emerge from its doors, armed to the teeth and ready to cancel the apocalypse. This is K. Michael Gibson's "Dead Pulse RISING."

Dead Pulse Rising by K. Michael Gibson is a fast-paced horror novel following the exploits of security guard Kyle Walker as he is caught up in the wake of a mysterious plague sweeping through the Baltimore area. He and his partner Marvin Winters come across a traffic incident during a routine assignment and find police officers being accosted by zombies. The intrusion of Homeland Security into the affair anticipates an escalation of events as Agent Alex Bishop is assigned to investigate. Kyle and Marvin soon discover that Russian scientist Ivan Morozov has confessed to complicity in a Soviet plot to spread a manmade virus throughout the USA. Infected patients are transformed into mindless cannibals, and if the plague is not stopped, the fate of America may well hang in the balance.

The author uses a first-person narrative along with omniscient narrative in taking us along the path of intrigue, suspense and wholesale carnage as the security guards join forces with HS Director Don Hammond and his operatives to deal with the outbreak. Kyle’s wife Karen provides us with the female perspective, her role as a day care provider placing her in a precarious position as the zombie menace threatens the children in her charge. The action moves flawlessly from scene to scene, and in the final frame Kyle finds himself compromised into helping the duplicitous HS agents continue on the mission. Yes, my friends, Volume Two is on the way.

Pick up a copy of Dead Pulse Rising by K. Michael Gibson. You’ll eat this up and be ready for more faster than a barrel full of zombies.

Better writing (grammar/punctuational) than many books in this genre and a good story line, though many of the descriptions of actions, places, zombies, etc could use an application of "less is more." Also, the protagonist does not strike me as someone with anything more than basic training and an interest in firearms under his belt. If it were not for the fact that he is "secretive," and he has a record indicating secret spy stuff, I would more associate him with someone who got a general discharge, bought some stuff at a surplus store and now believes his own hype.

With the glut of zombie novels out there, it's kind of hard to separate them all.

There's always an absolute waterfall of cliches and under written characters so where would this one fit? Would it fall to those cliches or would it stand head and shoulders above the rest?

Well, come over to COASM to see the full review but take my word on this. This novel is definitely well worth eating brains for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not a dull moment! I can't wait for the next one!
What started out as an ordinary day for Kyle Walker turned out to be anything but. He's an ordinary guy with an ordinary life. Ordinary job. Loving family. Today, however, would not be ordinary. He's being pursued by a government who is clearly hiding or covering up something. Fighting what were once ordinary people who now seem to be infected with some unknown illness. This is no ordinary day. This is something out of a horror film! All he can think about is getting to his family. He's running out of time and he's running out of patience.

Drooling, growling infected; been there, seen that. The governments bio weapon gone bad; been there too. Fairly interesting with decent characters, but nothing new for the genre. The story revolves around several security (brief)cases containing documents regarding the bio weapon. These cases were shipped via armored car before the outbreak, but once the outbreak occurred the cases were to be recovered by the government to protect the guilty. Sound familiar? Evidently this is the first book of a series. I'll allow three.point.five for the effort.

The characters were good, but the plot seemed to drag. There was a bit too much POV switching at the beginning.
