Mr. Darcy - Bitten, A Novella - While touring the Black Forest with his father, fourteen-year-old Master Darcy is bitten by a wolf. When the wound does not heal, Old Mr. Darcy consults a doctor and learns that his son has actually been bitten by a werewolf. As the years pass, Fitzwilliam has come to accept that for two nights of the lunar calendar, he is a creature of the night, prowling the grounds of Pemberley with a small pack of werewolves. He understands that for reasons of safety, it is in his best interest to marry a she-wolf. But that decision was made before he met Elizabeth Bennet. Mr. Darcy - Bitten is the story of Fitzwilliam Darcy's pursuit of a woman who is fully human, but whom he cannot live without. IMPORTANT Mr. Darcy – Bitten is the prequel to Mr. Darcy’s Bite, published by Sourcebooks Landmark in 2011. Several of the chapters in this prequel previously appeared on the blog, Austen Variations, but are no longer available on the Internet. After the serialization of Mr. Darcy – Bitten on Austen Variations, I was asked by many of my readers to expand the story and to put it in book form so that it could be purchased as an e-book. I have done that and have published the novella independently. About a third of it is entirely new content. Original content has been revised and edited. 25,000+ words
I am the authors of several Pride & Prejudice and Persuasion re-imaginings. I have also written a modern love story, The Second Date, Love Italian-American Style, and three British mysteries, Three's A Crowd, A Killing in Kensington, A Death in Hampden, Dying to Write, and Murder by Moonlighting.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother, volunteer, reader, writer, serious recycler.
When I read for relaxation, I read mysteries. My greatest love is history. When I am doing the research for a new book, I love digging for historical nuggets.
Having read the two sequels to this novella AND having read a bit of this prequel on a blog, today I found that it was published in e-book form. So I determined that I must read it.
We learn the horror of a young teen traveling with his father near the Black Forest in Germany and while leaning on a tree emptying his stomach due to a bad meal is bitten by a wolf. His father's denials of the seriousness of the bite do not make it different. He consults and finds help as the condition generated is permanent. Certain members of his family know and protect him during his changes. His valet is also in on the secret.
Usually werewolves mate with each other but if they mate with a human that person must know and accept all forms which their spouse takes on. And they mate for life. So this book details Darcy falling in love BUT his path to determine if a wolf horrifies Elizabeth and then when he proposes at Hunsford...well now he has a whole different set of problems. (Reader, you do know his ineptitude there.)
Finally as he and Bingley return to Hertfordshire we read that as that shire has no secure lands on which Darcy can be safe during the full moon. Therefore he travels back to Pemberley on a monthly basis and when Elizabeth complains as to the disruption in their courtship he decides to invite her to visit there in company with Anne and Georgiana.
I really liked this book. It's the first that I've read by this author but will not be my last!
Its premise is quite interesting as it sets the scene for the next book in the series.I can't wait to find out what happens!!
I recommend this book to all who like their Darcy and Elizabeth..... with a bit more bite!!!! I won this book on the JustJane site..... My thanks to Mary L.S. and J.J!!!
Bitten takes the Mr. Darcy's Bite story back to the beginning and leads the events from the point of Darcy's bite through to the events of book one. I enjoyed having it all filled in and seeing what Darcy and Lizzy were thinking as events unfolded.
And though this is a prequel as far as chronological order, I think it works best if it is read after the first book though it will also work if read first, too. It's a summary-style story so it covers events, but I felt it assumes the reader is already familiar with the earlier released books in the series. This one extends scenes that were mentioned in Mr. Darcy's Bite and moves quickly forward through the events.
For those of us that are Lord Antony fans, he has a moment and yes, it brought a chuckle. Loved the camaraderie of Darcy with his valet Mercer and also Darcy with his cousins Richard and Anne. There were some sweet moments between Lizzy and Darcy's wolf. Ominous foreshadowing near the end preps the reader for what is to come next.
All in all, I was glad to return to the Mr. Darcy's Bite story to the very beginning of it all and it makes me want to continue forward and re-read the other books. Austen fans who like a mild paranormal element to their story should give this a try.
This review is from: Mr. Darcy Bites Back (Kindle Edition) I just finished the entire "Mr. Darcy Bites" series. After seeing that Mary Simonesen recently published a prequel in this series, I felt compelled to try it out, as this is the perfect season for a spooky read!
My interest was held throughout all three books. In the prequel, we read about the events similar in "Pride and Prejudice," but now we learn how Darcy the Werewolf becomes a werewolf as a young teenager, how his parents struggle and cope with his new condition, as well as how Darcy comes into Elizabeth Bennet's life, after making some big decisions about his own future.
On her trip to Kent, Elizabeth meets a beautiful black dog with eyes that seem to read her inner thoughts. Because she is compassionate and curious, she develops feelings not only for the dog, but for the man himself, as their paths cross throughout the book.
I loved the roles of Anne de Bourgh and Georgiana, as they became close confidantes of Darcy and Elizabeth throughout their unusual "courtship." Anne is stronger in spirit but still tender in physical strength. Georgiana is emotional but loyal. Together, they offer unparalleled support to Elizabeth as she comes to terms with her new understandings about her life.
I loved the love triangle in the story, with Nell the wolf and her bad girl behavior! She's spirited, she's mean and she's after Derbyshire's beloved bachelor. Will her intimate relationship with Darcy stand in the way of Darcy and Elizabeth's path to happiness?
Part werewolf, part gentry, this series does a wonderful job straddling between both worlds, offering historical insights and references to enjoy as we delve into the life of one brave and fierce werewolf. Could the perils of loving a human be as tumultuous as living as a werewolf? Once you start this series, you'll be drawn into a world of moonlight, madness and romance...
As a lad Darcy of Pride and Prejudice has been bitten by a werewolf, his story begins here as the main characters converge at Rosings Park. Here at full moon Darcy becomes a werewolf which Elizabeth encounters as she is out looking for the full moon. Look forward to the next installment.
Huge fan of Mary Lydon Simonsen and I read the other 2 books a few years ago and loved them. So I scooped this up imediately and was not disappointed. In this novella it gives you the back story as to what and how it happened and how they dealt with it.
Loved this so much that I went back to my kindle and loaded the first book and reread it. What better recomendation can you get than that! So yes I definetely recomend this book
Interesting and enjoyable story of how Mr Darcy became a werewolf. This also includes how Mr Darcy evolved through his life as a werewolf. Throw in the issues Darcy has with Elizabeth and some of how the work through. Read this then Mr Darcy's bite.
A fun, fulfilling backstory/prequel. Everyone makes their appearance and I'm just hoping, going forward, there's not too much repetition in the central piece. This Darcy is smitten and committed to his course and Elizabeth, though still unawares, is equally in love. Don't you just love when they reach that "loving" part without all the angst? Well, except for that little werewolf issue ... Ah well, there's always something!
