Excerpt from Four-Square, or the Cardinal Virtues: Addresses to Young Men

These Addresses have appeared in the homiletic monthly. They are written rather with an eye to scientific accuracy than to unction, eloquence and rhetoric.

A very fine book, if in some ways dated by its examples and by certain preoccupations. But the dating serves a purpose for the contemporary reader: it makes the datedness of his or her own one-sided diet of examples and unacknowledged preoccupations stand out. Rickaby writes in a clear, racy, idiosyncratic style that is both provocative and memorable. Pair this volume with his Moral Philosophy volume or his translations of Aquinas.
