The Author, Monseigneur Etienne Lelong, was born at chalon-sur-saone on December 3, 1834. From his earliest childhood it was manifest that he was called to the priesthood. After successfully completing a brilliant course of studies, he received Holy Orders in 1857. Twenty years later he was appointed Bishop of Nevers, and he held this see until, by a sudden death, God called this faithful pastor to receive his eternal reward in 1903.
La Semaine Religieuse de Nevers in an obituary notice thus speaks of the deceased prelate.
