A former officer in the Royal Navy, John Pratt was the author of a variety of fiction and non-fiction works published under the pen name John Winton. Pratt also served for 14 years as an obituarist for The Daily Telegraph.
Mr Winton covers his subject extremely well. There are times when the reader may feel he has written a history of the war under consideration, especially when covering the Pacific of WW II. But aviation is so involved in that conflict I don’t believe it possible to separate the two. Winton knows his subject very well which allows him to create an interesting pace as well as interesting content in Air Power At Sea.
A readable overview of the aero-naval campaigns of WW2, with many now-classic photographs. Written for a British audience, and slightly slanted in that respect. Another bias is in favor of carrier-based air, neglecting and almost ignoring the powerful land-based air units, most notably of Beaufighters, Mosquitos, and Ju-88s in particular. Still, a worthwhile introduction.
