Wild animal babies are celebrated in these attractive, easy-to-read books for beginning readers. Best of all, they illustrate species that are often persecuted and misunderstood, such as, well, prairie dogs.
Prairie dogs have complex social lives and methods of communication. In this book, we learn about everyday life as a prairie dog, along with wonderful photos of prairie dog parents and young in which youngsters may recognize their own families.
Prairie dog colonies face tremendous persecution in the American West, so it is always a relief when a more positive image is shown. Perhaps a new generation will learn to see these animals as something more than living rifle targets.
(The fact that predatory animals, such as coyotes, hunt prairie dogs in mentioned, but human persecution is not discussed within the text.)
