The Life of President Edwards

Excerpt from The Life of President Edwards
In preparing the Memoir, the Life by Dr. Hopkins, which is the testimony of an eye-witness, has been incorporated; and the quotations are marked in the usual way, except where the paragraphs are seriously altered by the insertion of new matter. In the last chapter, free use is made of a brief sketch of the Life and Character of Mr. Edwards, (also the testimony of an eye-witness, ) by a gentleman connected with the college at Princeton, probably Dr. Finley, inserted in the first edition of the Treatise on Original Sin; as well as of a well written review of the Worcester Edition of bis works, in the Christian Spectator. To a friend I am indebted, for the very brief account of the two Treatises on Original Sin, and the Freedom of the Will.
The works, heretofore published, are taken from the English Edition, as far as it contained them, without alterations of the language. The notes of its editor, Dr. Williams, arc marked with a W. at the end, and have been retained by request.

This is the introductory biography in the Banner of Truth’s two volume collection in the works of Jonathan Edwards. The biography teeters between good and great depending on the section, but the overall synopsis is quite good. Edwards should be in contention for one of the greatest Americans in history. His influence was wide, his abilities great, his enemies many, his friends few, his faith strong, his country in infancy, and his confidence steadfast. As I look forward to reading many more of his works, this sort of background of the man provides valuable insights for proper understanding and appreciation.

Stirring insight into the life of a great Christian and theologian. My only qualms are that it often reads like a hagiography, and the large collection of letters might belong better in an appendix or separate volume. Will definitely be returning to his resolutions and his church's resolutions
