I read this partly for background on WW1 partly because I have lived in Germany. At first glance it looks slightly dated. Once you start reading it is riveting.

Basically it is an insider's view from the German side of the events leading up to the outbreak of the war, which exposes it as a needless folly by a German establishment without judgement or moral integrity who gave a blank cheque to an Austro-Hungarian regime bent on domination of the Balkans.

They thought they were planning the third Balkan War. They were stumbling into disaster.

Who needs Dan Brown, when the truth is even stranger.
