It is not necessary for me to say much on the present occasion, unless it be to thank the Public for the general approbation which they have bestowed upon the following sheets. Its merits and demerits have now passed that ordeal, which bestows either fame or disgrace upon the productions of the human mind; and I may look back with satisfaction to the opinion of those, in private life, who, unbiassed by friendship, have acknowledged its claims to praise, and the public testimonies of the Reviewers who have awarded their approbation.
