William Newell was one of the greatest Bible teachers of his day. A friend and colleague of D.L. Moody and R.A. Torrey, he taught thousands of people as a Bibke teacher in Moody's Bible college. His book, Romans Verse by Verse, is hands down one of the best Bible commentaries on the book of Romans ever written--if not the best. Newell is true to the Pauline dispensational view of the scriptures and is clear about the error of Reformation theologians who try to make a good show for the doctrine of justification but miss the mark on sanctification by trying to keep the Law as the rule of life for the Christian. Newell is also the author of some great hymns like At Calvary and Only Sinner Saved by Grace. This book has stood the test of time for a reason. William Newell had an incredible grasp of Scripture, which he was able to share clearly on the printed page.
William Reed Newell (1868-1956) was known for his Biblical commentaries on Romans, Hebrews, and the Book of Revelation. He moved to Leesburg, Florida, in 1910, and for some time was pastor of the Presbyterian church there.
Can we understand the deeper teachings of the Bible?
Newell's commentary is more or less fine, but Romans has some controversial passages. It is for these passages that I'm interested in a commentary at all, so I was disappointed at how quickly Newell appealed to God's inscrutability. Clearly God is beyond us. We'll never fully grasp Him even if we have eternity to do it. Even so, I believe Paul wrote his letter to the Romans in order to be understood. Humility aside, give me an opinion, man.
This will be an ongoing read and reference.. I have only gone through Romans 1 so far, as that is primary reason I purchased this years ago.. to accompany a deep dive/memorization of that chapter. In going back through my highlights, I am compelled now to give this 5 stars and to go read through the remainder of the chapters.
This book is changing my life. God knew I was desperate for a deep understanding of all the layers of salvation and reconciliation Jesus has accomplished for us. The freedom of the Gospel is on full display in a way I have never seen before through Newell’s intricate and grandfatherly presentation. It is a salve to my soul.
this one of the best commentaries on Romans tgat I have ever read! If anyone is truly wanting too learn the book of romans, this issue will not dissapoint.
