Revolutionary Writing: Common Sense Essays in Post-Political Politics

Rate this book
This volume contains 14 radical essays in open or autonomous Marxism, subverting (by critiquing) the typical concept of the politcal, and examing the configurations of the insurrection of global labour against global capital. concept of revolution is itself in crisis. The resurgence of anti-capitalist movements across the globe is a hopeful sign. Yet, the most disturbing is the contemporary indifference to revolution. What does anti-capitalism in its contemporary form of anti-globalization mean if it is not a practical critique of capitalism and what does it wish to achieve if its anti-capitalism fails to espouse the revolutionary project of human emancipation? Anti-capitalist indifference to revolution is a contradiction in terms. The misery of our time demands that we, once again, dream revolution, that is, orient our theoretical and practical activities on the ideal of the society of the free and equal.

This collection presents the open Marxist perspective of the group around the Common Sense journal. The high points are selections by Bonefeld, Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Harry Cleaver and John Holloway. The multiple essays by Negri seem misplaced, as many of the other pieces sharply critique Negri’s newer concepts and formulations. However, most of these writers share a general understanding of the social factory, post-Fordist class composition, and the role of state and party as forces of capital domination, and therefore owe a lot to someone like Negri.
