Introducing children to the exciting world of engineering. My Mummy is an Engineer is the first book title from Butterfly Books, who publish career-based children's picture books. The aim is to transform the way in which youngsters perceive various careers. By raising awareness of careers from a young age, Butterfly Books aims to reduce the national skills gap problems as well as promote gender equality in all careers. The hope is that the books will not only educate, but also inspire!
When I am not using the left side of my brain writing books, I am using the right side of my brain doing technical writing and engineering drafting. So, I was excited to see a picture book for children like this one that clearly shows what it can be like in the amazing world of engineering.
I love the bright and interesting geometrical illustrations that perfectly compliment the rhyming verse. It made the whole experience very enjoyable as I am particularly fond of the lyrical aspects of the book. I can relate as most of my own books include songs as well. It just makes reading and learning that much more fun for kids.
This book truly delves into a myriad of ways that engineering make this modern world of ours tick along like a well timed clock. I encourage you to get it to read with your child today.

Readers’ Comments ‘Well illustrated with a strong and very important message. The rhythm is a little clumsy in parts but, apart from that, an excellent book to have in any classroom.’ Primary school teacher, aged 46
‘I liked this book a lot. It is difficult to find books which inform very young children about what they can do when they grow up. But this book is perfect for that. I particularly loved the fact it was her mum and not her dad who was the engineer.’ Female Parent, aged 40
‘Excellent in every way. Easy to follow and visually strong. Fantastic message too.’ Primary school teacher and literacy co-ordinator, aged 55
‘This is a fun book. I’d like to make a submarine when I’m older. Or a big balloon.’ Boy, aged 7
‘A sweetly illustrated story with a powerful message. A BRONZE medal winner!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
Love this book! Though I may be biased since I am a mom and an engineer, lol. Nice simple rhyming book to read to kids. My sons enjoy it. I think it captures a lot of what engineers do. The illustrations are bright and love that the characters appear multi-racial. I have the e-book but I may consider getting the hard copy because I just love the idea of promoting moms as engineers :)
read ATY 2022: a book about a woman in STEM Colourful and exciting with added nice touch of a woman having good career but still having time for their children
