Adequate photographic coverage of German and Italian forces in North Africa. This volume is dated now, and the title is, of course, something of a misnomer. "Afkrikakorps" referred to only one tiny component of the Axis forces in North Africa and the book clearly is about the entire scope of Axis land forces there. Italian forces, Luftwaffe troops, and heavy tank battalions (i.e. Tiger units) are all covered in the photography despite the fact the two divisions that actually comprised the Afrika Korps never included these forces. There is very little text that actually applies to organizational or operational history. The photo captions are good, but the pictures seem to have been randomly selected and serve no real purpose other than making scattered commentary on various topics such as tropical uniforms, wearing of equipment, the employment of captured vehicles (there are many photos of British, American and Canadian-pattern trucks, for example) and other topics.
Anyone expecting a bonafide history of the organization known as the Afrika Korps will be disappointed - far better to try and find Bender's excellent book on the Afrika Korps. This is simply a picture book intended for scale modelers. The colour plates by Volstad were done at the beginning of his career in the early 1970s - but hold up surprisingly well.
