DS James Ripley #2

Evil is Easy

Rate this book
An obsessed stalker. A missing young woman. A race against time.

DS James Ripley and DC Coffey have less than 72 hours to find a young woman, kidnapped by her deranged stalker, who is becoming increasingly unhinged and seeking to harm his captive's former boyfriends.

The detectives also delve further into the recent spate of executions carried out by three police officers, and uncover a secret network of vigilantes operating within the police force. The revelation puts Ripley and Coffey in extreme danger, and they soon discover the frightening lengths to which the clandestine organisation will go to keep their existence hidden.

Fans of Angela Marsons, Paul Finch and Helen H Durrant will be thrilled by the British series that readers are calling a 'gripping, fast-paced must-read'.

I write psychological thrillers and crime fiction. I'm a ginger night owl that tries his best to avoid sunlight. Akin to a vampire, only I prefer brown sauce to blood. I have no sense of smell which is useful because I douse everything I eat with brown sauce. It also means my surname is quite fitting.

This is a gripping, action-packed thriller that keeps you guessing on every page. Once you start you're gripped and you simply have to know what happens. DS Ripley, with the attractive female DC Coffey, are an unlikely team and the sexual tension between them drives the story forward in many ways, as you wonder if they’ll ever be partners in more than the professional sense.
The story begins with Ripley investigating the so called ‘suicide’ of a senior officer. Ripley suspects that this man was part of a cell of unprincipled and ruthless corrupt police officers, whom he fell foul of. These guys execute criminals at will, and the dead man had contacted Ripley in his final hours with a plaintive and very private and enigmatic cry for help.
However, in the midst of Ripley's investigations something more important takes his attention: a girl has gone missing, and we next see things from the grizzly twisted viewpoint of her captor.
There’s violence, but it’s not gratuitous, and the plot shoots along like an express train, alternating between the viewpoints of Ripley and the madman who kidnapped the girl, who becomes steadily more deranged. All along you’re aching that Ripley and Coffey will be able catch up with the madman in time to save her life. Saying any more might spoil the story, but I’ll just add that you certainly won’t regret getting this rip-roaring, top-of-the-range thriller.

Slow build up to a gruesome and suspenseful finish. It was a good and entertaining book, and just like the first one in the James Ripley series, left me on a cliffhanger so I just HAVE to read the next one.

OMG...

Well Mr Brown has done it again... A fantastic addition to the Ripley serious. While managing to grip the reader with a truly thrilling story an underlying plot entwines itself cleverly throughout the serious. And WHAT a cliffhanger!!!!
Would love there to be an audible version Jonathan Keeble or Angus King would be fantastic narrators

A good follow up

I have also read the first in this series plus the first book. A very good read, keeping the story line going with a new investigation running alongside it. A good descriptive writer with plenty of suspense. I recommend you read them all. Looking forward to another book.

The kidnapping part of this novel is gripping and excellent, the police investigations into vigilante killings - well, to me they kept informing more police of their suspicious, without ruling out the person they spoke to and this annoyed me. Shame as otherwise a really excelling book. 3.5* rating.

This book starts with DS Ripley and his partner DC Coffey investigating the "suicide" of Chief Superintendent Leonard Tandy. Ripley had received a text from Tandy asking him to check on his family. Ripley believes that Tandy was involved with the Avenging Angels Group, a group of police officers who are killing criminals. He and Coffey are threatened, as well as their families, to back off or else...
A young woman goes missing and Ripley and Coffey are assigned to that case. Ripley is sure she has been kidnapped. We go back and forth between the police investigation and the kidnapper's thoughts and actions. The investigation is nerve racking! AND then the book end on a cliff hanger that has me anxiously awaiting the next one in the series.

Excellent follow up. Read this immediately after the first and was not disappointed. Bit gruesome (one chapter), but needed as part of the story. Left on a bit of a cliff hanger with the prospect of a follow up. Well written and descriptive, loving DS Ripley. Can't wait for the next one, get writing Mr Brown!!

Second book in the DI Ripley series. In the aftermath of all that occurred at the end of the first book, Ripley & Coffey are still continuing a covert investigation into how widespread the corruption is. When Ripley receives a strange text from one of his superiors, things take a turn - but the duo still can’t work out who they can trust and who they can’t.

This didn't have the same punch as it's first but overall still a great read.
Must be extra hard writing a book with 2 story themes never mind 1.
Very interesting and knowledge but felt it had a few minor flaws
Hasn't out me off and will download the final instalment

Extremely awesome

The story is quite scary, because who do you know? Who do you exchange brief conversations with?!?!
How does he get obsessed with you?
How do you escape his obsession?
Scary thought that you are just doing your job and someone takes advantage of you!?!?

Slow for the first half, but then got interesting

Very slow to begin with, but started to enjoy half way through. Worth reading, but a bit of an abrupt ending.
