Transitions: Russians, Ethiopians and Bedouins in Israel's Negev Desert

Between 1989 and 1991 nearly 360,000 Soviet and 40,000 Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel, many settling in the arid southern region known as the Negev. Scholars in the fields of social work, international studies, and geography, are joined by photographers and journalists to compile this photo essay on the experiences of these communities and the native Bedouin enclaves this period of settlement and beyond. The articles explore the racial and ethnic obstacles these groups face, the social and economic crisis experienced by lack of infrastructure, as well as some of the success stories of the Negev settlements.
