Waiting for an Echo: Two Volume Set

Rate this book
Reader “This is a well written read that you will enjoy from start to finish.” “I loved every minute of this book! The author develops the characters beautifully and takes her time developing the storyline as well.” “I appreciated the interesting twist to the original storyline, and especially the author's style with a command of the English language/grammar.” ***** Mr. Darcy’s is finding it difficult to decide between duty and happiness as he considers two women in Kent as prospective brides, and joins Mr. Bingley at Netherfield to gain distance and perspective. He never thought his eye would be captured by yet another woman . . . This is a dual volume set, of the beloved series, Waiting for an Echo. ***** “Trust Mr. Collins to add two and two and come up with five! Elizabeth did not know whether to laugh, cry, or simply bludgeon him with one of her father’s books.” “I do, Lizzy,” responded Jane, not without compassion. “I also know that it is time you conquered your disappointment and began to live again. It is not right that you should be stuck with this half-existence while that . . . that . . . scoundrel who hurt you blithely continues on as though nothing has happened.” “If you could think for even a moment that I would consent to such a marriage—assuming Lizzy herself should be irrational enough to give her own consent—then you are more foolish than I could have believed possible. The man hurt and exposed your daughter to ridicule after paying exclusive attention to her and, I dare say, engaging his own honor in the matter. Leaving her for another when he had led her on in such a manner was not the action of a gentleman, despite how he may protest his ‘sudden love’ for this other woman.” Scroll up to enter a whole new world in the Pride and Prejudice universe!

Jann Rowland

79 books190 followers
Jann Rowland is a Canadian, born and bred. Other than a two-year span in which he lived in Japan, he has been a resident of the Great White North his entire life, though he professes to still hate the winters.

Though Jann did not start writing until his mid-twenties, writing has grown from a hobby to an all-consuming passion. His interests as a child were almost exclusively centered on the exotic fantasy worlds of Tolkien and Eddings, among a host of others. As an adult, his interests have grown to include historical fiction and romance, with a particular focus on the works of Jane Austen.

When Jann is not writing, he enjoys rooting for his favorite sports teams. He is also a master musician (in his own mind) who enjoys playing piano and singing as well as moonlighting as the choir director in his church’s congregation.

Jann lives in Alberta with his wife of more than twenty years, two grown sons, and one young daughter. He is convinced that whatever hair he has left will be entirely gone by the time his little girl hits her teenage years. Sadly, though he has told his daughter repeatedly that she is not allowed to grow up, she continues to ignore him.

This was just delightful.
A variation woven with the characters of P&P, but different enough to make it fresh. Loved the Georgiana version of this story and Kitty too, but specially Mary even tho they were in a way secondary to the other characters. And I must say that Lydia and Caroline were not missed at all.
There was just the right amount of drama interwoven throughout to keep gentle highs and lows flowing and my interest peaked.

I wasn't sure I would enjoy this earlier JR book as some later ones left me with a bland and repetitive aftertaste. However, I completely enjoyed it and will reread in the future.

I never heard an echo
3.5 stars - Can’t quite give it 4*, but it’s better than 3*.
I purchased the two-volume set, but counting each volume as a separate read in order to have a proper count for my 2021 reading challenge.

Volume 1 January 5, 2021
Volume 2 January 6, 2021

In Volume 1, we are introduced to a different Bennet family; namely, Elizabeth and Jane are fraternal twins—Elizabeth being the oldest. Kitty is blind due to an illness and fever she experienced when younger. She is not the Kitty depicted in most stories, and is more sensible a girl and has a better relationship with her older sisters. Lydia is silly and has no major role in at least the first volume. Elizabeth has been spurned by a former suitor, which has caused her to avoid assemblies and dancing. She refuses to participate whenever possible, and therefore is not present at the Meryton Assembly when the other Bennet sisters are introduced to the Netherfield party. Only Bingley, Darcy and Georgiana make up that party. Georgiana wants Bingley and dislikes the Bennet family. The Hursts and Caroline, who is already married are absent. Darcy has left Kent to consider his options for marriage between two women, one sickly (Anne de Bourgh) and the other, Miss Baker (beautiful but stupid).

Collins sets his sights on Jane and all the sisters work to protect her from him, especially Elizabeth. Mary has a plan for him. Darcy still manages to insult and offend Elizabeth, whom he doesn’t need as another complication to his life. He is particularly ornery in his attempt to separate Jane and Bingley. The gentleman are under the impression that Jane is the oldest sister. A London rake sets his eye on Elizabeth and Darcy rescues her.

Volume 2
Bingley returns to Jane and Elizabeth goes to Rosings, where two deaths occur. I won’t spoil it. Elizabeth’s former suitor reappears, and miraculously, every time he does, Darcy soon appears to come to her aid. It wasn’t difficult to figure out who that old suitor was, even early on in the first book. His name isn’t mentioned until the second. There’s a surprise involved concerning a will.

It seems like the books, this review has become way too long and unusually revealing for one of mine. It’s a good story, but Mr. Rowland has definitely written better variations. I can still recommend it. I always enjoy how he changes things up. The one thing that went over my head is the “echo” in the book title. I somehow missed a reference, or got lost in the length of the two volumes. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Waiting for an Echo.

Leila Eye and Jann Rowland have put together an excellent 2-book story that has everything! So many interesting twists and turns, that fit perfectly as a Pride and Prejudice alternative tale. The development of the characters and situations were just perfect. I could hardly put it down! I had actually passed it up, in favor of Jann Rowland 's other stories, but I had decided to give it a try. Just as soon as I started to read the first few pages I knew I was in for a treat. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys some diversions before our Dear Couple 💑 let themselves trust to love each other in marriage Great story!!

Just finished binge reading all of Rowland's P&P variations available on Amazon. He takes the Bennet family on quite a rollercoaster ride. Very enjoyable reading. Thanks to Mr. Rowland!

Lovely

Another charming and interesting variation inspired by Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice by the talented duo of Jann Rowland and Lelia Eye
