London, 1940. The war is raging across Europe and twenty-three-year-old Grace is devastated by the loss of her husband, Brian, at Dunkirk. Her secretary job keeps her mind from dwelling on her sorrow but when her boss enlists in the air force Grace is left without work. Alongside her best friend, Helen, the two young women join the War Office. As Grace throws herself into the war effort, she must find the courage and strength to start her life over and find love again.
I've given this a four but I'm dithering between a three and a four. I read it this afternoon and that's what it is, an easy Sunday afternoon read. This is about Grace and when we meet her it's 1940 and she's already lost her husband. Shortly afterwards she loses her job also. Then she and her friend Helen decide they have to do something for the war effort. From the description of Helen, you know what she's going to end up doing. Grace is more or less a secretary throughout with some escapades and adventures thrown in. There also seems to be a long list of men who meet her and fall for her straightaway. It was all a bit nicey nicey for me. Grace was supposed to be this independent lady who stood for no nonsense but this only came through once or twice. The parts with the actual war were written without much passion I thought. Bland!! That's the word I'm looking for. There was also too much informality between Grace and senior officers. I really don't think Majors or Generals ever put themselves out to the extent described here. Maybe I've just read too many books in this genre and am too critical. But of course this review is just MY opinion.
It's 1940 and Grace's husband has been killed in the war. Grace is twenty-three years old and she was only married to her childhood sweetheart for a year. She's heartbroken and seeks distraction in her work as the secretary of a lawyer. When her boss decides to enlist as a pilot she has to find a new position. Together with her best friend Helen Grace joins the War Office. It's a new start for her, the beginning of a journey she thought she'd never take. Being part of something important shows Grace how strong she actually is and it brings her the company of many interesting men. Is there one person who's special enough to win her heart or will it be broken forever?
The Day Will Come is a beautiful story about a capable and determined woman. Grace is a fighter with a good head on her shoulders and she never gives up. I'm a big fan of books about intelligent women who can stand their ground and loved her from the start. Grace decides to use her despair for something meaningful instead of letting it get the better of her. She joins a worthwhile cause, which makes a great story. I enjoyed reading about the officers she meets and about the work Grace has to do for them. Grace and her friend Helen are both extremely brave and their work is sometimes dangerous, but they don't think about that, they just keep going. Their adventures are numerous and I loved the way Beryl Matthews describes them.
I've read quite a few World War II stories and think it's a time we should never forget. The Day Will Come is a really good one and I highly recommend it. Bery Matthews has a wonderful warm writing style. The story covers about five years of Grace's life and is fast-paced. There are quite a few time jumps and they always feel natural, which is something I liked a lot. Grace's life is never boring and I loved that there are many turns of events that often surprised me. Grace lives in a difficult and uncertain time, but she tries to enjoy herself as well. She likes the new friends she makes, the adrenaline rushes, the comradeship and the challenging work. Beryl Matthews brings a good balance between sadness and joy. She also describes the stress of not knowing what happened to your loved ones very well. I especially admired the versatility of her story. The Day Will come is a fantastic multilayered book with a lovely fitting ending.
Grace is 23 and a war widow having just lost her husband Brian. She still lives with her parents but works as a secretary for a lawyer. She enjoys her job but when her boss, James tells her he is joining the RAF, she is suddenly out of work. He encourages her to meet with a friend of his for a position and she decides she must keep the appointment to please James. Before she knows it, she is hired and asked to organize the office of a Army officer who is recovering from his injuries. He informs her he is intent on returning to duty but still needs to physically heal. Her experience working for Daniel is a challenge as he insists she follow him everywhere and she even ends up learning diversion tactics and hiding in a ditch. That position leads to another position and this time she is put in a dangerous situation but she is determined to do anything within her power to help defeat Hitler and the Nazis. An interesting story and one I quite enjoyed.
I was gifted this book on a visit to England and really enjoyed reading this novel. It was paced well and the flow read very naturally. The story is set in London and drops you right into the action. The main character is not only likable, but there were times I really empathized with her. At one point towards the end, I even got a little choked up while reading.
I would have awarded this novel five stars because it is very well done from a literary perspective, but I found myself having to backtrack to sort out some characters that pop in and out sporadically. Overall, I would recommend this book and I finished this book in 10 days!
A very serene novel combining a soft relaxing beginning with the entry of England into second world war. It is a well written tale of duty, respect, and love. It moves along at a smart pace that.keeps the reader interested and looking for the .next Piece. Truly enjoyable.
I really enjoyed following the military through WWll
Adventures of Grace and all her friends and military officers during the warning England and Europe. She started bad a widow and ended as a officer in the Army.
This is the second WWII novel I have read by this author in as many days. Very light, a bit fluffy and very predictable, but quite enjoyable! This author had her first novel published at the age of 71, and has written 16 since then. What a woman!
I loved the story. It rang true for me for a variety of reasons. I am almost old enough to have been a Helen or Grace during the war. Thank goodness for courageous women.
This book gives an excellent view into how lives were turned upside down during the war. The lives lost, changed and put on hold for many dangerous years of the war along with the the bonds formed. Well worth the read..... I had a hard time putting it down!
O.M.G. THIS WAS AN AMAZING READ. What more can I say. Loved the characters their personalities and the way it was written. One of her best. Thanks Beryl
An easy read, this was a look at the war through the eyes of a newly widowed young woman of integrity. Sheer determination and courage get her through.
If you like good war stories of home and away with a bit of everything this one will keep you going to the end. I really enjoyed it but then I have enjoyed many of Beryl Matthews books.

I really enjoyed The Day will Come. It is the third novel that I’ve read by Beryl Matthews and so far, is my favourite. It is a fast pace novel and it set during the Second World War. I really liked the main characters, especially Grace. Looking forward to read more books by this author. Grace lost her husband on that dreadful day in Dunkirk and things got worse when she lost her work. Grace and her friend Helen want to be useful in the world. They are willing to risk their lives. As days go by, the War intensified, France has surrendered and London was being bombed. Would Grace find her way? Is she ready to sacrifices her life for the cause?
an intresting subject.women in the uk army during ww2.but written like a 12 year old wrote it. no conflicts. everyone is perfect ans polite and strong....blahhh. good for teenagers learning to read english
A very interesting read, and you realise what a lot of people served their country secretly. I enjoyed this book very much as I always do with Beryl Matthews books.
It's sometimes a real treat to read a novel with no gore. Set against Britain s heroic struggle throughout WWI1 this is a story of decent people doing what has to be done. Despite some tragic loss there us a happy ending
