A thoroughly researched, yet entirely engaging, intellectual history of Freud. There are some fascinating details of authors who were writing on hypnotism, splitting, "the double" -- basically an early horror reading list! Freud's quirky, neurotic character is vividly drawn--his relationships, struggles, travels, and most exhaustively, his dreams and his dogged willingness to analyze them. I would consider it the best biography on him, and encourage preparatory reading of a few chapters (on his discoveries of the Oedipus Complex, the Primal Scene, etc.) as introductory texts.
