A very nice and visually appealing guidebook to Minnesota waterfalls. Gorgeous photographs supplement the waterfall details which cover location, directions, website, waterway, nearest town, height and crest, hike difficulty, trail quality, round trip distance, and admission. In addition, each listing also has a trip report and tips summary with information gathered from the author’s own visits to each waterfall. I found these summaries quite useful with detailed directions and helpful information particularly on trail conditions and seasonal differences.
There are 117 detailed listings along with 24 additional waterfalls to explore listed at the back of the book. As to be expected, most of the waterfalls are located near Duluth and points northward along The North Shore, but there are even some to explore in the metro Twin Cities area including those within the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to explore waterfalls along The North Shore simply because this guidebook covers so many in the area. 12 of the author’s top 20 waterfalls are located there, with another 18 listed as must-see, as well as many others of lesser status.
I only have one dislike for this guidebook. I would have liked a separate page listing both the top 20 falls and the must-see falls, along with an overall map showing the locations. That would make it easier to select the best falls to see if I am located in a certain area or have limited time to experience several waterfalls. Currently, all the waterfall locations are shown on one page, while the facing page lists each by name with a small colored dot denoting top 20, must-see, or other status, yet the accompanying map does not depict the waterfall’s status.
There are several excellent guidebooks to Minnesota’s waterfalls, including this one. I’ve never compared them side by side, but I bet each has an outstanding feature or two that sets it apart from the rest. I plan to utilize them all especially the next time I’m exploring The North Shore.
This is a perfect guide for any type of waterfall enthusiast. The directions of how to get to the falls are precise and the terrain surrounding the falls. She also includes her experience of visiting along with beautiful pictures she took. It is easy to read and was a joy. I'm making big plans for hiking next spring!
Beautiful pictures. Great information on the waterfalls. Definitely want to buy my own copy. I loved the fact that boundary water waterfalls were included.
