Call me an outdoor geek who's been writing about trails and wild places for decades. I've authored four Washington State hiking guides in 12 editions; an award-finalist guide to Washington, DC (now out of print); and two new titles in 2026: Ultimate DC: Travel-Walk-Explore (a full-color guide to hundreds of iconic and lesser-known sights), and Boots on Fire (50 years of hiking and climbing across North America), all by Tired Dogs Press.
I've worked professionally as an outdoor recreation planner on the west and east coasts, with a specialty in planning and designing trails, bikeways and greenways. In my spare time, I enjoy--you guessed it--hiking, biking, paddling, sailing and travel.
This book is nice in that it introduces parks and other areas for outdoor recreating, but I don't consider these as hikes. I would have liked a book listing longer and steeper hikes in Snohomish County. Surely, there must be more than what's in the book?
The best hiking guide for sound-to-mountains hiking in Snohomish County, although a bit dated. Ken Wilcox's updated version is due out this year, but so far it isn't available...soon, maybe? Ken? Hello....?
