Dagan Cadden knows that one day he will grow up to be a hard man like his Da. The older he gets, the more he sees himself away from the coalmine and perhaps away from Cape Breton itself. If he follows his dreams of becoming an artist, Dagan will have to break some of the rock-hard traditions of his family, and make his way toward a future that is much less certain.
funny! I have a soft spot for regional writing. Fun being familiar with the local references too. Growing up in Sydney, I was "in" on a lot of the jokes/references and the character were made even more 'real" I'm adding this ti my DAR bookshelf even this isn't one of his books because the best compliment I can give to this is to say how much it reminds me of early David Adams Richards...feels like Nights Below Station Street, only it's meant to be more of a funny read. :)
I'm giving this 4 stars. It's Canadian author Brian Tucker's first novel. You get a real flavour of life in a Cape Breton mining town. Written with lots of humour. I could see Gordon Pinsent in the movie version:)
