This "novel" are gathered serials which was meant to shine light on the experience on the daily life of a Civil War soldier. It is done so with a humorous twist and it's obvious the veterans were the intended audience of these stories.

However, you can see where Crane got most of his inspiration for the "Red Badge of Courage". The diction/slang is copied verbatim and there is a thematic discussion of what makes a man and how cowardice is the true enemy of manhood.

Excellent book and worth reading in spurts.

The narrative is simple and a little shaky, but has a ring of authenticity (it's written by an actual Union soldier) that is unlike any other war book I've ever read. That, alone, makes this well worth the read!
