The organization of the company and the first election of officers and managers under the charter, took place early in the summer of 1844, the precise date of which cannot now be ascertained, owing to the destruction of the records and papers of the cor poration in the memorable fire of the l0th of April, 1845; at that election, Richard Biddle was chosen President; Charles Avery, Thos. Bakewell, John H. Shoenberger, James R. Speer, Wilson mccandless and Thos. M. Howe, Managers; Nathaniel Holmes.
