Please see photos. Ishmael Scott Reed is an American poet, novelist, essayist, songwriter, playwright, editor and publisher, who is known for his satirical works challenging American political culture. Born in 1938, Reed's writing has dealt with the place of the ethnic minority in this country. His anthology, The California Poetry brings together the work of more than 150 California authors, a significant number of whom are of Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and African heritage. The California example points the reader toward a contradiction in the American experience that Reed deals with often in his that is, the promise of assimilation held out by this country and the cost at which it comes. While this treatise was published in 1993, it would appear its themes are as timely or more so today than when written.
